Right in the middle of a crucial part ofone minute game their damn advertising boxes pop up :( covering a good part of my board.

This happen to anyone else?
Thanks. Not a bad article as it tells you how you can disable the majority of Avast popups, but unfortunately not those amazing fabulous mind bowing special deal popups :P Not unless you pay their ransom at any rate.
I had a hunch that would be the case, which is why I didn't even bother searching for ways to do it I was able to fine tune things for a little bit of an improvement though.
Too bad all companies/ internet sites are not like lichess!!
Avast is my favorite free AV.

Boot time scans are very thorough!
I've always liked avast but their popups are getting progressively intrusive. I have no problem with the quality of the product, it's just those annoying popups. And even then I wouldn't mind if they didn't cause a big disruption at a critical time.
It does have a silent/gaming feature but it seems to think in order for it to be a game it must be a full screen application like warcraft or something. Web based chess does not get that possibility. But yea, otherwise it's very good for a free AV. I'd even choose it over a paid one like Norton or Mcafee because it does a good job, is not such a resource hog/bloatware, and even the free version has good features.
Tell me. I've been telling my family to get rid of Norton and Mcafee for years.
#5, would the silent gaming feature work if you fullscreened your browser?
I think it's gotten better, but at one time Norton used to be realllly hard to get rid of. You could download programs to do it , but even then there would be some left overs. There were even websites that offered professional service to uninstall Norton. That to me is a tip off right there :P

An interesting thought about fullscreen browser. I might do an experiment on that and see :)
If you're going to pay for an AV, Karpesky is the only option that has had reliable results over many years. It is still just about the best to this day, though it was briefly dethroned by NOD32.

Personally I think home users aren't at real risk, though if I ran a firm with several Windows computers, I would pay for an AV.

For home users, the freeware Avira AV is easily the way to go. Don't believe me? Take it from the AV-Comparatives:

avast! is sometimes on the list, but it isn't always listed, unlike Avira.

They have in-depth reports and descriptions of their tests on the rest of the site, if you are interested:

I do not want to hijack this thread, but I am completely oblivious to almost anything that has to do with computers. For starters, I have never heard of Avast.

It seems I am running AVG on my computer as well as the basic Microsoft protection devises. Now with the media bombarding us on the dangers of online surfing, be it banking online or whatever, is that any good in terms of basic online/ID protection?

All help is appreciated in advance.
