As it happens to be, 0.999... is not equivalent to 1. It is rather *equal* to 1. If you disagree, name any scenario where 0.999... behaves one way and 1 behaves another way.
no matter how long you repeat the 9's, it will be just a teeny tiny bit smaller than 1

No it won't, the problem here is people not understanding the concept of infinity. 0.999..., as shown with the 6 methods in #3 and the method in #7, is equal to 1. If you can prove to me that 1-0.999...!=0, then I will happily concede, in fact, I want you to try and prove it wrong so that I can clear up even more misconceptions.
less than 1 is not equal to 1, no matter how small that gap is.

That isn't a proof. I have provided legitimate proof that suggests that 0.999...=1, do you have any such mathematical proof?

that is not how math works, you can't just state something that makes sense in your head but is wrong, please check evidence from the entire forum, even if you won't understand the math you will see that there is actual proof

There are an infinite number of numbers between 0.9 repeating and 1.0.
Learn more theoretical math before you try that kind of smoke[-and-mirrors stuff.
