Is there a link between chess and intelligence?

In my own observation, there is no causation. Most of the chess players is met, rating over 2000, are no more intelligent that the average person. I have also met many intelligent people who don't play chess well. My observation is very limited, less that 50 people, but results should be fair.

Of course there is no link because there is nothing special about chess. Any mental activity is good for your brains in general. But doing mathematics or even playing certain computer games might be more rewarding than playing chess as they are more transferable to real life.

A lot of chess depends on knowing certain rules or strategies of the game which come with studying chess and analyzing a lot of games, and through time pattern recognition becomes very important in finding the right move. In other words your brain has to serve the game not the other way around.

I think chess doesn't make you smarter, but it helps you to be more concentrated and patient.
