clousems heavy metal playlist
I like metal, dangit!I've been getting a lot of metal questions of late, so I've decided to make a brief overview of some bands I like. There will probably be follow-ups to address ones I missed.
The Big Ones
IRON MAIDEN
Best metal band ever. Best concert I've ever attended. Best mascot. Best pilot/lead singer. These are just a few superlatives that Maiden has earned. If you don't know Maiden, then you don't like metal.
Recommended: Hallowed be Thy Name; Writing on the Wall; Killers; Literally anything that wasn't on Virtual XI.
BLACK SABBATH
I prefer the Dio years. Anything with Dio is good.
Recommended: Heaven and Hell. Also, Rainbow Rising.
JUDAS PRIEST
Not as big a fan as some others, but they're still classic. I was at the show when one of their guitarists had a heart attack while playing Painkiller.
Recommended: Painkiller
QUEENSRYCHE
Operation: Mindcrime is my all-time favorite album.
DREAM THEATER
Highly recomended if you like non-metal genres.
ASSORTED NWOBHM
I like a lot of NWOBHM bands. These aren't all that popular nowadays, so you probably haven't heard them (unless you like NWOBHM already).
Just a list of some bands that I like:
Spider/Vardis: Status Quo meets Saxon. Boogie metal.
Satan: Very good band. Trial by Fire is a kickass song. It is also damn near impossible to play on piano. Court in the Act is a solid album in general
Quartz: Satan's Serenade is one of the best metal songs ever. And you can't find the studio version on iTunes or any CD, which is a shame.
Saxon: Bigger name. Many good songs.
Tank: Like Motorhead, only... actually, they're pretty much Motorhead.
Elixir: Very cool sound. Borderline power metal.
Diamond Head: Best known song is "Am I Evil", which is better than the Metallica cover.
Demon: Just an awesome band. Night of the Demon is an all-time great album
Angel Witch: Nothing remarkable, but enjoyable
Hollow Ground: See above
Praying Mantis: Very underappreciated band. Time Tells No Lies is a fantastic album.
Killers: Features Paul DiAnno on vocals. Murder One's Marshal Lokjaw is another one of my favorite songs. It's Painkiller meets Judge Dredd.
Grim Reaper: See You in Hell is a good song.
Samson: Bruce Dickinson's old band.
Witchfinder General: Free Country is one of the best songs about drugs of all time-- which is a surprisingly big accomplishment. Cover art tends to feature naked women in graveyards.
Savage: Cry Wolf is another awesome song.
Witchfynde: ... as is Give 'em Hell
Sweet Savage: "Killing Time" is a good album. Metallica covered the title track, took out the n-word, and made it popular.
Atomkraft: Very sci-fi
Other bands of note: Raven, Tygers of Pan Tang, Tokyo Blade, Blitzkrieg, Fist, Girlschool, Jaguar, Persian Risk, Saracen, Cloven Hoof
