Using the lichess app on Android requires chrome

Unless I'm mistaken, the Lichess app uses a rendering engine provided by google chrome. Without chrome on my phone, I get an error message from the lichess app suggesting as much. I don't like google, and would love to be able to use such a fantastic app without having to have a google product active.
I'm hoping therefore that there's a workaround or other misunderstanding of mine. I use an old phone with an old version of android, I can look up version numbers if that's relevant.
The twitch.tv site won't ever work with Firefox for Android, here.
A SystemWebView based on Bromite (de-googlified Chromium) works. This might not be easy to install, though, so alternatively, you can just use the website which, IMO, is better than the app on mobile.
Thanks for the tip, I'll see if I can get that working. I do most of my playing on the website, but it's nice to be able to dip into a puzzle or two or check in with a correspondence game when I'm out and about of course :)
