The system is giving a range of puzzles that reflect all skills to see how well the player performs, to adjust their rating accordingly.
If the player seems to be performing well up to a certain rating for a while but then solves a harder puzzle the system is confused and gives the player a high rating change, which is what's happening to your student.
The rating deviation is currently above 110, the question mark will disappear when it will be under that, then will start becoming more and more stable according to the frequency the student plays puzzles, independently by the result.
